Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
