A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
